TASK 5: How libraries are using social media

Many libraries are using social media to announce events, promote their services and generally stay in touch with users and communities. Libraries can also use social media as a way of encouraging new customers in using their services.

Blog

Leichhardt Library has 5 blogs they post on their website. They are Book Art Blog, Leichhardt 5000, Local Notes Blog, Parker 51 Blog and ShelveIt Blog. Parker 51 Blog for instance is a blogging site meant for bibliophiles to share and discuss authors, books, any literary events and topics of local history.

YouTube

The State Library of NSW YouTube page features topical videos that cover a range of subjects from viewing the Library’s future new children's learning centre in the Mitchell building to promoting the Library's exhibitions and collections.

Facebook
The State Library of South Australia uses their Facebook page to announce current news of events, as well as updates on their book collection. The events range from holding exhibitions to having talks called ‘Genealogy Gems’ where the Library introduces its’ resources and services to people who are interested in family history.

Twitter

The State Library of Victoria uses Twitter to announce some of their favourite books that the Library holds to introducing new collections.  In addition Twitter is used to inform people of times and dates of talks from authors and scholars who are going to visit the Library.

Instagram

The Los Angeles Public Library invites users on their Instagram page to view images they shared of important events from the past and the vast collections that the Library holds. They also showcase their library space and display works that shows the Library’s history.
