TASK 2: What are social media tools

Facebook– It’s a free social networking site where it allows people to connect and stay in touch. It allows individuals and organisations to create profiles, upload photos and videos and send messages.

2   Twitter – A free real-time, micro-blogging social network. Registered users can create short posts called ‘tweets’, which are then made available to be seen in public. Registered users can also follow other people’s tweets and can stay connected by using hashtags to a keyword (#keyword). Due to its short SMS delivery system, posts can only consist of 140 characters. Anyone can read these tweets but to make comments you have to be registered.

LinkedIn – Is a social business networking site for professionals who want to connect with other professionals. Basically it allows professionals to network in the business community. A basic membership is free to register and the person must already have a pre-existing relationship with other network members, called ‘connections’, meaning someone they knew or worked with professionally. The general page contains information on the individual’s skills, employment history and education status. This site also allows references and recommendations to be included.

Pinterest – Is a Pin-board style social site for sharing and categorising interests through images. The site is a visual concept, but it does allow brief comments to be made. More information can be found by clicking on the image where it takes the user to the website.

Instagram – Is where users capture images and then photo-share them with other registered users. These users can be friends or the general public.  The images can be photos or videos and can be edited, sent and shared on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or Foursquare. This social media site is designed to look like a photo album, documenting on your day-to-day activities. The most frequently used shots are posing for ‘selfies’ and they can be taken and then sent by their smart phone or tablet. They can also be shared on other social websites including Facebook, Twitter or Foursquare.
